BIM for manufacturing

This course will explore workflows that support the convergence between mechanical engineering and BIM projects. The core business of a design and manufacturing company is its products, engineered with solutions like Autodesk Inventor, Fusion and AutoCAD. The workflows covered in this course will demonstrate how this existing design data can be prepared and consumed by architects and construction professionals at a level of detail that is appropriate for BIM Projects.

Having completed this course, you will be able to:

  • Prepare existing Inventor native design data for use in BIM projects
  • Export .ifc using the BIM Enviromnet Tab in Inventor
  • Export .rfa using Inventor and Revit Interoperability workflows (Inventor version 2022 required)

Course outline

Publish configurable Inventor model as a BIM object

By the end of this module, you will be able to convert configurable 3D CAD models from Inventor into BIM objects so architects and contractors could use your products in their projects. The manufacturing model has a level of detail and IP unnecessary for BIM, so it needs to be simplified and prepared for BIM.

Please note, this module does not include the Inventor to Revit Interoperability workflows introduced in Inventor 2022.

The manufacturing model has a level of detail and IP unnecessary for BIM, so it needs to be simplified and prepared for BIM. In this series, you will learn all why’s and how’s on preparing and publishing your building product in a BIM compatible format and also making it configurable.

Having completed this module, you will be able to:

  • Simplify electromechanical 3D model
  • Avoid exposing intellectual property in your models
  • Define MEP connectors for downstream use in BIM
  • Export BIM-ready models from Inventor to Revit

Inventor and Revit interoperability

This module teaches you how to utilize the latest Inventor and Revit interoperability workflows to coordinate design activities completed by manufacturing and construction professionals. You will learn how leveraging Revit Project Files in Inventor allows manufacturing design work to be completed in context and how sharing manufacturing designs as Revit project files can help provide early indication of clashes to construction professionals.
