00:04
Foundation slab types can be created for different concrete thicknesses as
00:08
well as composite structures such as a slab on grade shown below
00:13
rather than detailing the blinding and screed.
00:15
These can be added to the structure and quantified for construction.
00:20
In this video,
00:20
we're going to edit the structural foundation slab type and we're going to
00:24
add sand to the base of the slab which will act as blinding.
00:27
And then we're also going to add some membranes in as well
00:30
to begin. Let's go ahead and select our foundation slab
00:34
in the 3D foundation's view. Go ahead and select this slab here
00:39
and in the properties pad it, we'll go ahead and select edit type
00:43
in the type properties dialog box.
00:45
Let's just check that we are in fact editing the 12 inch foundation slab
00:50
and now we can edit the main structure of our foundation slab.
00:53
Let's go ahead and select edit
00:57
when working with the edit assembly dialog box. It's always useful to see a preview
01:02
to enable the preview.
01:03
We'll go ahead and select preview in the lower left hand corner of the dialogue.
01:07
We can now see that we have a live preview of our slab
01:12
in the layers area.
01:13
Here, you can currently see that we have the core boundary,
01:16
which is the main area of our foundation slab.
01:19
And inside this, we have the main structure,
01:21
this is using concrete normal weights. And you can see here it's 1 ft thick.
01:26
We're now going to add a new layer which is going to represent our blinding
01:30
to do this. We'll go ahead and select insert
01:34
and you'll notice by default, this is inserted below the core boundary.
01:37
That's good for what we're doing.
01:39
But what we do need to do is change the function.
01:42
So I'm going to change this from a structure to substrate,
01:47
we can then select our material.
01:49
So in the materials column where it says by category, we'll select this
01:53
and then we can select browse
01:54
and this will enable the materials browser
01:58
in the materials browser. We want to search for sand.
02:00
So we'll type in the word sand in the search bar
02:04
and you can see here that we have sand already in our active project.
02:08
Let's go ahead and select that.
02:09
And we're just going to review some of the properties.
02:12
So we can see the cut pattern is used in sand dens, which is good.
02:15
And if we come up to the shading, you'll notice it's using the render appearance.
02:19
So it's taken on this sort of sand color that you can see here.
02:22
So everything is good. We can select ode and the materials browser dialog box
02:27
and we can now see that material is added in
02:30
under the thickness column. We want to set this to two inches thick.
02:36
Notice in the preview window,
02:38
we now have our sand blinding displayed underneath the concrete slab
02:42
in between the blinding and the slab. We need to add a membrane
02:46
to do this. We'll go ahead and insert another layer.
02:49
We'll now change the function. And in this case, we're going to use a membrane layer,
02:54
we'll change our material.
02:55
So once again, we'll select by category and we'll select the browse button.
03:01
And in the materials browser dialog box in a search bar,
03:04
we're going to look for a vapor retarder.
03:06
So we'll just start to type in the word vapor
03:08
and you can now see we've searched for vapor retarder.
03:12
We'll select this material and select, OK.
03:16
Now, the membrane layers cannot have a thickness.
03:18
So we'll leave the thickness set to zero here.
03:21
And of course, when we want to schedule this,
03:22
we can just simply schedule the area required.
03:27
OK?
03:27
So we now need to insert another layer on top of
03:30
the foundation slab which is going to represent a screen.
03:33
So we'll go ahead and select insert
03:36
notice here that that new layer has been inserted below the concrete.
03:39
Of course, I want this above the core boundary.
03:42
So you'll see here that we have an up and a down button.
03:45
So I'm going to use the up button here just to move that layer above the core boundary,
03:51
we can then change the function from structure.
03:53
And in this instance here, this will be finish one,
03:57
we can go to our material.
03:58
And again browse
04:01
I'm going to type in screen
04:04
and you can see here we have a material named slabbed screed.
04:07
And of course, here again,
04:09
you'll notice we're using the render appearance for shading
04:12
and we have a cut pattern again using dense sand.
04:15
So we can select OK to the material's browser.
04:18
And of course, that material is now added,
04:20
we now need to set a thickness for this.
04:22
So once again, we're going to have two inches of screed above the slab
04:26
and that's now set.
04:28
The last thing we need to do is
04:30
add another membrane layer directly underneath the finish
04:33
to do this. We'll select insert once again,
04:36
the layer needs to be below the screen.
04:38
So we'll select the down button just once here just to move that below the finish.
04:43
The function will be membrane layer.
04:47
We're going to use the same material vapor retarder
04:49
rather than searching again in the materials browser dialogue.
04:52
We can simply use control C to copy that value
04:56
and then select the material here and use control V.
05:00
Once again, the thickness will be zero
05:03
and that's our foundation slab type created.
05:06
So we'll go ahead and select OK
05:08
and OK again to the dial off box
05:11
and you can now see the foundation slab has updated.
05:15
Let's now take a look at the quantification in a schedule
05:18
in the project browser under the schedules and quantities folder,
05:22
double click on foundation slab schedule.
05:25
We can now clearly see for our 12 inch foundation slab
05:29
that we now can quantify each type of material separately.
05:32
So here we have our vapor retarder.
05:35
We have our volume of concrete required the volume of sand,
05:38
blinding and also the volume of our screed.
05:42
So in summary,
05:43
adding these new layers to our foundation slab helps us quantify the
05:47
materials required for construction and also speeds up the detailing process.

02:42

02:46
