Project | Make the Ride Possible: Design an accessible trail storage solution

Explore how design can make cycling more accessible by completing Fusion accessible trail storage challenge inspired by Noel Joyce’s adaptive handcycle project.

‌

Module overview

Noel Joyce started Project Mjolnir to make adaptive mountain bikes more accessible and affordable, with a design that wheelchair users can build, customize, and repair themselves. Using these principles and a user-centred design approach, each adaptive mountain bike can be configured around the needs of the individual rider rather than relying on a single, generic design.

In this project, you will apply the same approach to design a solution for storing essential trail items on the adaptive bike. You will begin by hearing Noel’s story and learning about the design challenge he needs you to solve. You will then consider the rider’s needs, define the requirements for your solution, and develop and evaluate concepts. Using Autodesk Fusion, you will design your chosen storage solution in the context of the bike before preparing it for prototyping.

Teaching supplements

These teaching supplements extend the published individual challenge with structured resources for classroom delivery:

  • K–12/CTE: A guided classroom version combining group activities with an extended individual design assignment, supported by educator guidance and assessment materials.
  • Higher education: A more advanced, team-based classroom version combining group analysis, individual design development, and collaborative selection, prototyping and presentation.

The downloadable ZIP includes the relevant exercise materials, instructor guide and assessment rubric, along with the challenge overview video for both challenges. The Noel Joyce story video is also included.
