The position of the core boundary within the wall assembly.
00:06
And the function assigned to the wall layers determines how walls will clean up.
00:11
When they join. In the model,
00:13
all layers positioned between the core
00:15
boundaries will always continue through to meet
00:18
the layers within the core boundary of the wall that they are joined with
00:23
layers outside the core boundary will be cut to allow this to happen.
00:28
Therefore,
00:29
the positioning of the core boundary is an important
00:31
factor in achieving the required junction between walls.
00:37
The layers are also assigned of function and
00:39
priority which will influence the clean up too.
00:43
There are five functions
00:44
with their associated priority shown in parenthesis
00:48
with priority one being the most important
00:51
and therefore priority five being the least important.
00:55
The function indicates what the layer may be used for.
00:58
But when walls join,
00:60
it is the priority which controls the clean up
01:04
and looking at the wall detail floor plan,
01:06
we'll use zoom region to zoom into the office at the top of the floor plan.
01:12
And we can see that we have a petition coming up to meet the exterior wall.
01:16
It's shown us the metal stud layer of this petition
01:19
going through the wall board and the fur in to meet the cmu layer of the external wall
01:25
and this junction works fine and is what we would expect
01:29
on the outside of the wall.
01:30
There is a section of wall that has the same granite panel finish on metal stud
01:36
and this will be used for a screen wall.
01:38
So it doesn't require the same structural or
01:40
thermal properties as the main external wall.
01:43
This wall does have to join the external wall though.
01:46
So I'll select it
01:47
and using the control at the end of the wall,
01:50
we drag this over the external wall
01:52
and it doesn't really matter where as
01:54
it would join the two walls according to the setting in the type properties.
01:58
And we can see the junction that it's created here.
02:01
It shows the metal stud and the air layers of the screen wall
02:05
coming right through to meet the cmu layer of the main external wall
02:09
and cutting through the insulation layer in the process.
02:13
So let's look at how rev it is forming this junction.
02:16
In this image, we can see the junction that we currently have,
02:20
which is the metal start and air layers of the screen wall cutting
02:23
through the insulation to meet the cmu layer of the main external wall.
02:28
The junction required is for the metal stud layer to
02:31
meet the edge of the insulation in the external wall.
02:34
And for the thermal air layers of both walls to merge.
02:38
Currently,
02:39
the main external wall has its core boundaries positioned around just the cmu layer
02:44
and in the screen wall,
02:45
they're positioned around both the metal stud and air layers.
02:49
And hence the layers contained in the core boundary are
02:52
cutting through all of the layers outside the core boundary
02:56
to meet each other and form the junction.
02:60
We will need to move the core boundaries to incorporate
03:02
the layers that we want to control in the junction.
03:04
So for the screen wall, they need to be moved in to contain just the metal stud layer.
03:10
And for the main external wall,
03:12
they need to move out to incorporate the insulation layer too.
03:16
But if we just move the core boundaries, we will still end up with the wrong junction.
03:20
As illustrated here.
03:22
And this is because the priority of the layers also needs to
03:25
be altered to give us the junction that we're looking for.
03:29
This means changing the installation in the main wall
03:32
could be a substrate with a priority of two.
03:35
In the screen wall,
03:36
the air gap layers must change from substrate to thermal air or a priority of three.
03:42
And the metal stud layer must change from structure with a priority of one
03:46
to be a substrate
03:47
with a priority of two.
03:49
And this will give us the junction that we require as we see here.
