Placing rooms and room tags

Place rooms and room tags.

00:03

In

00:04

a room is an object that defines the space within a building.

00:08

When designing a building,

00:09

we think about the rooms that we need to create

00:12

such as kitchens, living rooms, bedrooms, offices, or classrooms.

00:16

And we model the objects that will enclose those rooms such as the walls, doors,

00:20

floors, and roofs.

00:22

And the room is the object that represents that enclosed space.

00:27

It calculates its dimensions such as the area and volume

00:30

and allows us to assign information such as the name, number,

00:34

finishes or departments.

00:36

And they can also be used to locate other objects

00:39

that are able to detect the room that they inhabit.

00:44

We're currently looking at the floor three plan view.

00:47

We can see in this office layout here that we have quite a number of rooms placed

00:52

and they all have tags associated with them

00:54

that display their name number and area.

00:57

And if we zoom in a little closer, and I'll select the reception tag just here.

01:02

We can see that that highlights the boundary of the room that it is attached to.

01:08

And if I move my mouse to the side of the tag here,

01:10

we can actually select the room object itself.

01:14

Now looking at the properties pallet,

01:16

we can see we have dimensions for area perimeter and volume

01:20

volume is not set to be computed in this project

01:23

as we are not performing any analysis or calculations that require it.

01:27

And the model actually works quicker without the volume being computed

01:32

below this, we can see we also have the name and number.

01:35

The room itself is bounded by objects in the model.

01:39

So if I select this wall

01:40

here

01:41

and then look at the properties palette,

01:43

we can see we have the room bounding parameter which is selected

01:48

and this wall along with the others around the reception here,

01:50

create the boundary for that room.

01:52

And if you were to move this wall,

01:55

the rooms that are bounded by that such as this reception

01:57

and the two offices here would change their dimensions to suit.

02:03

Now, looking at the end of the plan here,

02:05

we can see we have some spaces here that don't yet have rooms placed in them.

02:09

So to do this, I'll go to the architecture ribbon tab

02:13

and from the rooms and areas panel,

02:15

we'll click the room tool.

02:17

Now, looking at the place rooms, ribbon tab here,

02:21

we can see that we have the tag on placement option enabled.

02:24

And in type selector, we'll change the room tag to be the room tag with area type.

02:31

Now looking at the plan,

02:32

we can see where we have rooms already placed as they're now shaded in blue.

02:37

And as we move around the outside of the building,

02:39

we can see we have a room attached to our cursor. However, it's not in an enclosed area

02:45

as we move over the building here and it finds an enclosed space,

02:48

we can see it take up the size of that room

02:51

and I'll move to the next one just here.

02:54

And now we can just click to place that room into that space.

02:58

And now we can continue to work our way around the other spaces here

03:01

and just click to place a room into each one.

03:05

So now that we have all of those placed, I'll click, modify to finish the room tool.

03:10

And now looking at the rooms that we've just placed,

03:13

we can see on their tags that they've all been assigned the name of room.

03:18

And this is a default for whenever we create a new room.

03:22

So I'll select the tag attached to this room here.

03:27

And now I can click on the room field

03:29

and we'll assign this the name of conference room,

03:39

looking at the other rooms. We have quite a few of them will be called office.

03:43

So

03:44

I'll select the room itself here and then

03:47

holding the control key down. We can select the other rooms along the edge here

03:53

and I'll go to the properties palette.

03:56

I'm from the name parameter here.

03:59

I'll start to type in office and then we can pick that from the list.

04:04

And then once we apply that we can see all

04:06

of those rooms are updated with the name of office.
