Introduction to CAD, CAM, and Practical CNC Machining for Milling

Course overview

Get foundational knowledge in computer-aided design (CAD), computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) and the practical use of CNC mills. Begin in Fusion CAD by learning how to read basic blueprints, how to properly sketch and model 3D parts. We’ll then explore CNC milling basics to ensure we have the knowledge needed to effectively define toolpaths.

Finally, we’ll set up a CAM program and define toolpaths to cut simple geometry. Learn the process that gets repeated in industry for the design and manufacture of any part and is a critical step for careers in machining and digital manufacturing.

After completing this course, you’ll be able to:

  • Summarize the workflow of digital manufacturing.
  • Apply CAD modeling skills to basic parts.
  • Identify and create elements of a detailed drawing.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills in Fusion CAM.
  • Explain foundational knowledge of practical CNC machining.

Announcements

During the recent Fusion Fall 2026 updates, several changes were made to CAM Milling toolpaths that may impact your ability to follow along with the content.

Toolpath Name Changes: Several CAM Milling toolpaths have been renamed.

  • 2D Adaptive Clearing – Is now 2D Adaptive Roughing

  • 2D Pocket – Is now 2D Offset Roughing (Pocket)

  • 3D Adaptive – Is now 2D Adaptive Roughing

  • 3D Pocket – Is now 2D Offset Roughing (Pocket)

Removal of Model Overrides: Model overrides allowed optional selections of geometry to machine, such as models with filled-in geometry or specific surfaces. This functionality has been removed and will now be handled through the Surface Manager.

Avoid/Touch Surface Change: The Avoid/Touch Surface functionality remains the same but has been renamed to Surface Manager.
