In Structural Bridge Design, once you have started a bridge project and defined materials, you can create design sections.
00:11
This can be done in multiple ways, including:
00:15
Create a custom section by manually defining the geometry.
00:19
Import sections from CAD software.
00:22
Create composite sections that combine different materials.
00:27
Utilize a section from a library.
00:30
Or, as in this example, use a predefined standard section or parametric shape and then modify it.
00:37
Designing each section individually allows you to reuse them as needed by later linking and embedding them into projects.
00:45
In this example, you need to create the shape shown here for an edge section.
00:51
You can start with a parametric L section, and then modify it by inserting points and changing the point coordinates.
00:59
With Structural Bridge Design open to the Home page, select New > Create From Template.
01:06
In the Create From Template dialog, select a template; here, EU Section is selected.
01:13
In the Save Changes dialog, click Don’t Save.
01:19
In the Main Menu, select File > Titles.
01:24
In the Titles form, enter a Section Title, such as “Grillage Edge Section”.
01:29
Because you are using a template, the other entries are already set up, so you can click OK.
01:36
Next, in the Navigation Pane, click the Materials group and remove any unnecessary materials.
01:44
In this case, remove both the Structural and Prestressing steel materials.
01:50
Right-click the Structural Steel material and select Delete.
01:55
Then, do the same for the Prestressing Steel.
01:58
Now, you can start designing the new section.
02:02
Click the Design Sections group.
02:05
Then, click Add and select Section Element > Parametric Shape.
02:10
In the Define Section Element form, set the Shape Reference to L.
02:15
Then, adjust the parameters.
02:18
Here, set the Height to 750, keep the Width as-is, set the Thickness of Vertical to 250, and set the Thickness of Horizontal to 200.
02:31
Notice that the shape adjusts in the graphics window as you update these values.
02:36
Now, for Property, select the first option, Concrete: MP1.
02:42
You see the shape turn gray in the graphics window.
02:45
Next, click Convert to User to convert the parametric shape to a defined shape.
02:51
This changes the form to a User Defined Section Element form and adjusts the graphic to display points.
02:59
Now, you can add more points and edit the coordinates to create the correct shape.
03:04
The lower-left corner of the L is currently active and corresponds to the first Element Coordinate listed in the form.
03:13
Select the second coordinate, and a red circle appears on the lower-right point of the L;
03:19
this is now the active point.
03:22
Click Insert record, and a new point appears midway along the horizontal base of the L.
03:29
Continue to add points in this way.
03:33
Select the fifth coordinate and click Insert record to add a point along the top of the bottom flange.
03:42
Then, select the eighth coordinate and add a point on the top edge of the L.
03:50
Next, adjust the coordinates.
03:54
In this case, change the second coordinate Y value to 450, and notice that the red dot on the bottom edge of the graphic changes location.
04:04
Then, adjust the first Z value to 250, which creates a chamfer on that corner.
04:12
To create the chamfer on the inside corner, change the fifth Y to 600, the sixth Y to 250, and the sixth Z to 400.
04:24
Finally, change the eighth Z value to 825.
04:28
Zoom out for a better view of the shape and adjust the positions of the graphics window and form as needed.
04:36
The last step is to adjust the point at the top of graphic to form an arc.
04:41
In the Element Coordinates form, for the eighth coordinate, select Arc.
04:47
You now have the correct shape for your design section.
04:50
Click OK.
04:54
In the Main Menu, click File > Save As, type a File name, and then click Save.
05:04
In the Section Overview dialog, click Done.
05:09
You can now reuse this section by linking and embedding it into projects as needed.
