Project | 07: Make a model engine left case

This is project 7 of 11 in the model engine project series.

Create the next part of the model engine by modeling, programming, and machining the left half of the engine case.

‌

Module overview

Using the model and engineering drawings provided, set up and program toolpaths for the left engine case.

Project scenario:
A customer has asked your company to redesign a model engine assembly and to machine a prototype. They have provided engineering drawings of the original. They would like all the internal parts to be interchangeable but would want the exterior design of the engine to be unique. This project requires you to model and redesign the engine case left half (LH) while maintaining the mounting locations for the case, crank, and cylinder as well as internal engine clearances. engineering drawing. Use the engineering drawing as a reference for the mounting locations and overall dimensions of the part. Consider various stock sizes and shapes to incorporate your unique design and consider any changes to the outside shape should be mirrored over to the engine case right half (RH) component as well.

The customer also asked your company to prototype the model engine case. They have provided engineering drawings of the original part as well as a CAD model. This project requires you to set up and program toolpaths for the case LH provided. Begin with the supplied engineering  drawing and CAD model. Use the engineering drawing as a reference to plan tools required and work out any work holding requirements. Consider various stock sizes and shapes and think about the number of operations required to machine the part. Sample process plans, setup sheets, cutting data, and inspection reports are provided but use your judgment, the tools, and machines you have available, and your knowledge to complete the project.
