00:04
So now we want to create a new material for the wood shelving
00:08
and we'll do this by duplicating an existing material.
00:12
So from the search bar at the top here, I'll search for wood
00:16
and we can see now that the project materials
00:18
have been filtered to show just wood materials.
00:21
And actually the library panel has two
00:24
from the project materials. We'll choose this wood panel material
00:29
and I'll make a duplicate of this. So I'll right click over it.
00:33
We can see that we've got two options for duplicated materials.
00:36
One is to duplicate the material with shared assets
00:39
and this means that the two materials, the original and the duplicated one
00:44
would use the same appearance asset,
00:46
meaning that if we edited it, they would both update
00:50
and we then got the option to duplicate
00:53
the material and its assets,
00:55
which means that we'll be entirely independent and
00:58
this is the option we'll choose.
01:01
And now we have that duplicated.
01:03
We can see it's named wood panel with one in parenthesis. Here
01:06
we rename it to be Wood Shelvin
01:12
and I haven't done that. We'll come and make some changes.
01:15
So I'll swap to the appearance tab here.
01:18
We can see we've got the wood panel appearance asset here and
01:21
that also has a one in parenthesis as that's been duplicated.
01:24
And we can see from the left here, the zero indicates that
01:28
no other materials are using this asset.
01:30
So we can edit this without fear of changing other materials.
01:34
We'll actually swap this asset for a new one.
01:37
So we'll come across to the right hand side here.
01:39
And at the top, we have the replace asset option.
01:43
So we'll click on this
01:44
and that will open up the asset browser.
01:47
And at the top here, we'll search for wood again.
01:51
Now, we can see that we've got physical assets and appearance assets.
01:57
So we'll go to the bottom of the appearance
01:59
assets here and we'll choose the wood category.
02:03
And now we can see the list of materials is showing all of the wood appearance assets.
02:09
So we'll scroll down to the bottom until we see the walnut materials here.
02:14
And we'll click on the walnut semi gloss
02:19
and then at the right hand end of it here,
02:21
we can see we've got a button here to replace the current asset.
02:24
So
02:24
we'll click on that.
02:26
And we can see now in the background that that
02:27
walnut semi gloss has been applied to our material.
02:31
So I'll close down the asset browser
02:34
and now we can see we have that Walnut semi
02:36
gloss appearance asset
02:38
applied to our wood shelving material.
02:41
We don't need to make any changes to this.
02:44
So I'll swap back to the graphics tab.
02:46
We can see that the shaded color has not updated.
02:49
So
02:50
I'll check the use render appearance option here.
02:54
We can see now that that color has been pulled through
02:56
from the appearance asset and is now a much darker brown.
02:59
I haven't got this material created.
03:01
We could add this into our new studio materials library,
03:05
so I'll right click over it in the list of project materials here
03:08
and then from the add to sub menu here, we'll choose studio materials.
03:14
Now, I'll clear the wood search term from the top of the materials here
03:19
and then looking down at the material libraries,
03:22
we can see the studio material now has the paint
03:24
bright blue material and also the wood shelving material.
03:28
So now having got those materials created,
03:30
we'll click OK to close the material browser
03:34
and now we need to add the materials onto our shelving family.
03:38
So I'll select the shelving family here and then
03:40
at the top of the properties palette,
03:42
we'll click edit type to access its type properties
03:46
and in the materials and finishes panel here,
03:49
we can see we have parameters for the shelf material and also the trim material.
03:52
And they're currently both set to be the cherry material.
03:55
Select to the shelf material. We'll click on cherry
03:59
and then from the ellipses button that appears,
04:01
we'll click on this and open up the material browser.
04:04
So in the search bar at the top, I'll search for shelving
04:08
and then we can see we have our wood shelving material.
04:10
So we'll select this and click. OK to assign that to the shelf material parameter.
04:16
So now I'll click the cherry material next to the trim parameter
04:20
and open the material browser from the button that appears.
04:25
And this time I'll search for blue
04:28
and then we can see we have our paint bright blue material. So I'll select this
04:32
and then click. OK.
04:33
And we can see that that's now assigned on to the trim material parameter.
04:37
So I'll click OK to apply these changes to the Shelvin family.
04:42
And we can see now that that material is updated,
04:44
so we can see the blue shaded color for the
04:46
trim and also the wood color for the Shelvin.
04:49
However, the view is in a shaded visual style.
04:52
So we're just seeing the shaded colors.
04:55
So I'll go down to the view control bar
04:57
and we'll click on the visual styles button here and change it to be realistic.
05:04
And now we can see that that's updated.
05:06
So although the blue still stays blue,
05:08
we can see the wood texture with the grain running front to back on the shelves.
05:11
And actually, we'd like the grain to run across the shelves here.
05:15
So I need to edit the material to adjust the actual texture.
05:19
So I go back to the manage ribbon tab and from the settings panel,
05:22
we'll click the materials to open up the material browser
05:26
from the search bar at the top, we'll search for shelving
05:29
and then we can see the wood shelving material. So we'll select this
05:33
now in the material editor on the right, we'll change to the appearance tab.
05:37
And now from the parameters panel just here,
05:39
we can see that we've got the preview of the image,
05:41
the the wood walnut color JPEG here.
05:45
And if we click on the preview,
05:47
it will open up the texture editor.
05:50
And here we can see a bigger preview showing the size of the image.
05:55
And looking further down, we have the scale panel and the sample size parameters.
05:60
I'll change the sample size width parameter to 12 inches
06:03
to reduce the scale down slightly.
06:06
And just above this on the position panel,
06:08
we can see that we also have the rotation parameter.
06:11
So we'll change this to be 90 degrees
06:14
and we can see that it's rotated in the preview now.
06:17
So we'll click done to finish editing the texture
06:20
and now we'll click OK to save the changes to the material.
06:24
Now, in the view here, we can see that that texture has rotated through 90 degrees
06:28
and it's now got the grain going the way we want it on our shelving families
06:33
and that finishes creating and applying the materials to the shelves in this model.
