Build and configure project templates

Create and configure a project template in Autodesk Construction Cloud to ensure consistency and save time across projects within your account.

00:03

You can create a project template in the Autodesk Construction Cloud to use as a starting point for a new project.

00:10

And, since Civil 3D recognizes the folders that are set up in ACC, this not only saves time,

00:17

but also ensures consistency across projects within the same account.

00:23

Begin in ACC on the Welcome screen.

00:26

Click the Project Templates tab to view the templates you have access to.

00:31

Note that when you create a template, that template can only be used in the account in which it was created.

00:38

If you do not see the Create project template button, check with your Account Administrator to enable this for you.

00:45

Here, you can click to Learn more about creating templates, or you can close this panel.

00:51

To create a new template, click Create project template.

00:55

In the Create template dialog, you can create a template from an existing project or create a blank template.

01:02

In this example, select Create a blank template.

01:07

Click Next.

01:09

Type a name for your template, select your Account, and then click Create template.

01:15

Once it is created, navigating a template is like a project.

01:20

You see the template name at the top, and when you expand the product picker, you see the available modules.

01:28

Here, Project Admin is selected, and the Configuration options are shown.

01:34

To add members, on the Permissions tab, click Add template members.

01:40

In the corresponding dialog, expand the drop-down of member emails, and select members to add.

01:46

You can also assign a Company, Role, and Access level.

01:52

The access level you choose will determine if the template member can view or edit the template.

01:58

Finally, select the products that you want each member to be able to access.

02:03

When finished, click Add template members.

02:07

Back in the Configuration settings, you can select a template member to adjust their properties.

02:14

Click the More menu to remove a member from a template.

02:18

When finished, close the member properties.

02:22

The members shown not only have access to contribute to the template,

02:26

but they are currently the only members who can create projects from this template.

02:30

Select the Details tab.

02:33

In the Advanced section, toggling on Publish the template makes this template available to anyone with the rights to create a project.

02:41

When this option is Toggled off, the template is only available to template members.

02:47

You can also edit the Template name here, if needed.

02:52

Expand the product picker and select Docs.

02:55

Notice that this mirrors the Configuration settings in the Project Admin module.

03:01

In the navigation panel, select Files to access the directory structure for the template.

03:07

Like setting up a project directory, when you click More,

03:11

or right-click a folder and select Add subfolder, you can build out your folder hierarchy.

03:18

In this example, several folders are added within Project Files, including a folder called “C3D Data” to be used as the working folder.

03:28

Next, assign folder permissions.

03:32

Click the More menu for a folder—in this case, Project Files—and select Permission Settings.

03:39

Permissions for templates are role-based, because roles are universal.

03:45

This differs from permissions for projects, which can be set up by company and by individual user.

03:51

Once you create a project from a template, you can then further edit the permissions by company and user.

03:58

To add a role, click Add.

04:01

In the Add dialog, add field, begin typing and then select Engineer.

04:08

Expand Permissions and, in this case, choose Edit.

04:13

This enables any member with a role of Engineer to view, download, publish markups, upload, and edit.

04:22

Permissions assigned to a parent folder are inherited by subfolders, as you can see here in the C3D data folder.

04:30

Note that you can increase, but not decrease, permissions in subfolders,

04:35

so best practice is to apply the most restrictive permissions at the highest-level folder.

04:41

Add another permission to the Documentation folder.

04:45

Click Add, then apply Create permissions for the Architect role.

04:52

Now, architects can only see the Documentation and Typical folders for this project template.

04:58

Additionally, you can add content to a template, such as files that you want available for every project.

05:06

In the Typical folder, click Upload.

05:09

In the Upload Files dialog, select Upload from your computer and then select the appropriate files—in this case, two Word docs.

05:19

Click Open, then Done, and close the Upload progress window.

05:25

You can see that these files are now available.

05:28

Note that you can upload any file type accepted by the cloud.

05:33

With templates, you can pre-load settings for future projects.

05:38

In the navigation panel, select Issues.

05:42

Here, expand a category to see the associated issue types and its status.

05:49

You can change the Status to Active or Inactive.

05:53

To do so, select the category, and then in the Edit Category panel, expand Status and select Inactive.

06:01

Click Deactivate to confirm.

06:05

Follow the same steps to deactivate Quality.

06:09

You can also create issue categories and types by clicking Create.

06:14

These settings are now presets for projects created with this template, but you can further edit them at the project level as well.

06:22

Next, select Statuses to see that you can also activate or deactivate individual statuses.

06:30

To add members to all projects created from this template,

06:33

switch to the Project Admin module, select Members, and then click Add project members.

06:42

As you can see, this dialog has the same settings as the Add template members dialog.

06:48

Here, two members are added, and product access is granted for Design Collaboration and Model Coordination.

06:56

When finished, click Add Project Members, and the members are pre-loaded to any projects created with this template.

07:04

Your selections auto-save in the cloud, so this new template is now ready to be applied to a new project.
