The selection tools in Alias are here on the Pick palette.

    00:06

And the two key tools are Pick Object and Pick Nothing.

    00:10

And we use these so often that they're also on

    00:12

the marking menus that pop up at the cursor position

    00:16

when I use Shift + Ctrl with the left mouse button.

    00:19

And these can be very quick to use once you learn the north-south positions.

    00:24

So let's use Pick Object by releasing the mouse.

    00:27

And up here, the prompt line says click on some geometry.

    00:31

So I can click on an edge,

    00:33

in the middle of a surface, or I can use a box-select,

    00:37

and then I just click again if I need to unpick.

    00:41

So the selected items are highlighted in the scene.

    00:44

And then over here on the Control Panel,

    00:46

there's also a tally of what I've got selected.

    00:50

I can use the Pick Nothing tool to deselect everything

    00:53

    and that's a momentary tool.

    00:54

So you'll notice up here that we're staying in Pick Object,

    00:58

    that's a continuous tool.

    00:60

So I can now just keep selecting.

    01:02

And this time if I do a click-release on this boundary,

    01:05

then the pick chooser list pops up

    01:07

and I can check which one I want and just pick it from the list.

    01:12

And if I come and click over here where there are four items

    01:16

and you'll see the one I've already selected has the blue check mark,

    01:19

so I can then just add another one to the selection.

    01:24

Another useful tool is Pick Component

    01:27

and that can be used to pick elements in a group,

    01:30

but it can also be set up as a filter.

    01:32

So if I have a look at Pick Curves on the marking menu,

    01:36

you can see that it's just the Pick Component tool set to curves only.

    01:41

So if I now drag-select across here, I've only picked these four curves.

    01:45

And it's the same with Pick Surface, it just selects the four surfaces instead.

    01:52

Another important tool is Pick Control Vertex

    01:55

and that will appear on your marking menu as Pick CV or Pick Vertex.

    01:60

And I can just click on a point

    02:02

    or do a small drag-select.

    02:05

But the important thing about CVs is that

    02:07

I can only select them if they're displayed.

    02:09

    So on this wheel,

    02:10

I can't work with CVs until I go over to

    02:13

the Control Panel here and turn on the CV display.

    02:17

And then now I can do Pick Nothing

    02:19

    and then use the Pick

    02:20

CV tool to select the CVs I want to sculpt with.
