Creating and Editing Feature Lines with Project Explorer– Practice Exercise

Task 1: Create a feature line from Project Explorer

Download the Dataset and Open the practice file, 001-Feature Lines Exercise.dwg.
Add-In ribbon > Project Explorer panel > Launch Project Explorer.
At the top select the Feature Line tab.
Select the second icon to create a site.
Name the site Ditch Grading. Click OK.
Select the first icon drop-down, select Create Feature Line.
Make sure the site is set to Ditch Grading, checkmark the name and change it to North Ditch. Click OK.
Click in the drawing area to make it active. Draw three vertices for a feature line between the north road and the site. Use surface elevation from AIW_Existing_Ground for all three points.


In the Project Explorer, above the profile view select the Compare To: drop-down. Use the small arrow at the bottom of the drop-down to scroll to the select the AIW_Existing_Ground surface.
Use the profile window to confirm the white feature line is matching the green surface profile at the three vertex locations.

 

Task 2: Edit the feature line in Project Explorer

In Project Explorer in the Feature Line tab change the Filter By: to Ditch Grading.
In the middle window select the North Ditch feature line.
With this feature line row selected press the <CTRL>  key.
In the lower window select the second vertex row. While selected press the <CTRL> key to identify where that vertex is. Notice that a temporary marker appears at the vertex.
At the top of the window change Compare to: West Mineral Ave > West Mineral Ave.
In the lower window select the second vertex row. While selected press the <CTRL> key to identify where that vertex is. Notice the vertex highlights and includes the distance label.
At the top of the window change Compare to: back to the AIW_Existing_Ground surface.
In the middle window right-click on the North Ditch feature line. Choose Set Constant Grade (Hold Start Point…).
Set the Slope/Grade% to -1.0. Click OK.
In the bottom window select the 3rd vertex row. Notice the elevation for that vertex.
Scroll to the right to find the Compared Elevation. Make note of the elevation value.
Scroll back to the vertex Elevation and double-click in that field.
In the Set Value field to the value from the compared elevation.
Task 3: Create a grading surface with feature lines from Project Explorer

In the Project Explorer select the Create Site tool. Name the site Pond Grading.
Change the Filter by: to Pond Grading.
Select the Create Feature Line drop-down and choose Create Feature Lines from Objects.
Select the pond polyline. Make sure the site is Pond Grading, and Name is turned on and changed to Pond Edge, Click OK.


In the Project Explorer middle window right-click on the Pond Edge feature line.
Choose Set Constant Elevation. Set the elevation to 5388.5.
In the Create Feature Lines drop-down select Create Feature Line from Stepped Offset.
Set the offset distance to 20’, select the pond edge feature line, then click inside the pond feature line for the side to grade. Set the offset to Slope of -4.00.
Repeat the Stepped Offset command from Project Explorer with distance of 10’ and Grade of -2%.
Repeat the Stepped Offset command from Project Explorer with distance of 20’ and Slope of -3.00.
In Project Explorer select the Surface tab. Select the Create Surface > Create Surface.
Name the surface South Pond. Click OK.
In the Toolspace > Prospector tab > expand Sites > expand Pond Grading > right-click on the Feature Lines group and choose Add to Surface as Breaklines.
Select the South Pond surface. Click OK.
Make sure the Type is Standard, the Distance is ON and set to 10, and the Mid-ordinate distance is set to .25.
In the Toolspace > Prospector > expand Surfaces > expand South Pond > expand Definition > right-click the Edits and choose Minimize Flat Areas.
Turn ON Filling Gaps and Swapping Edges. Turn OFF Adding Points to Flat Triangle edges and Adding points to flat edges. Click OK.
