MAN: We can add all sorts of items of different categories
00:10
to our model such as toilet, sinks, desks, chairs,
00:14
office equipment, lighting fixtures, et cetera,
00:16
using the component tool.
00:18
So I'll Zoom in over here in this toilet room area
00:23
and place a few fixtures in each of these spaces.
00:27
To do that.
00:28
I'll go to the Architecture tab and click the Component tool
00:31
and on the type selector there are a few components
00:35
to choose from but none of the plumbing fixtures that I need.
00:39
So that means I'll need to go over here and click the Load
00:42
Family button and that will take me to my US Imperial folder.
00:47
I'll scroll down and locate the Plumbing folder
00:51
then the Architectural and then Fixtures and finally
00:55
Water Closets.
00:57
I'll select a Commercial Toilet and click Open.
01:01
This is a wall hosted family so you could see the tooltip tells
01:05
me I need to click on a wall in order to place an instance.
01:08
So I'll place one right here and then
01:12
another one here in this space.
01:15
I'll stay in the component tool, go right back to load family,
01:18
it should remember the folder that you were in a moment ago.
01:22
And I'll back up one step and then go into the sinks folder
01:26
next.
01:27
Now an easy way to tell what's in each folder
01:29
is to just simply select the first item
01:32
and then use the down arrow on your keyboard
01:34
to quickly page through all of the available items.
01:38
So I will select this single sink here
01:41
and this mop sink here using my Control key
01:44
and then click Open to load both of those families.
01:48
So the single sink is also a wall
01:50
hosted family so I will place one here on this wall
01:55
and then another one here on this wall.
01:58
Then I'll come over here to the type selector
02:01
and the mop sink will also be available on the list,
02:05
and you can see that this one is not wall hosted.
02:09
So it's a freestanding family, I could place it anywhere
02:12
that I like and if I use the space bar I can rotate
02:16
this in 90 degree increments.
02:18
So I'll tap the space bar a few times and rotate it around
02:21
and then I'll place it next to this wall here on the right.
02:26
I'll remain in the component tool, hold down my wheel
02:29
and pan over to this upper portion of my plan
02:34
here where I have several exam rooms near the top.
02:38
And then I'll go right back to load family
02:41
and back up a few folders.
02:43
And this time I want to go into the casework folder and then
02:48
into the countertops folder.
02:49
I'll select this countertop family right here, click Open.
02:53
When it comes in, it will again be a freestanding family
02:57
that does not require a host but it's in the wrong orientation.
03:01
So once again I'll tap my spacebar to rotate
03:04
and then I will place one in the corners of each of these exam
03:10
room spaces.
03:11
Let's load family one more time, back up one step
03:14
and here in the casework folder I'll go to wall cabinets,
03:18
I'll choose a double door wall cabinet click Open.
03:24
And then place two of these in each of the exam rooms.
03:37
Now there are several other items
03:39
that we could add to the plan and you're welcome to continue.
03:43
Simply repeat the process of loading families
03:46
and then place them where you'd like them to go.

If you do not have the folders listed in your installed library, each of the families mentioned has been provided with the dataset. You can alternatively load them from there instead.

Figure 14–2 Add sinks
Let’s add a few items to some of the exam rooms
Zoom in on the exam room at Grid intersection D6.
Figure 14–3 Place countertops in the exam rooms
Figure 14–4 Add some upper cabinets above each countertop
Continue in this way adding other equipment and furnishings. There are many items included in the provided library. When you are unable to locate an item you need in the provided folders, you can try searching online. There are many websites devoted to sharing Revit content items. Some are free and some charge a fee. Always take some time to test out the content items in a temporary project before loading into a live project just in case there is some behavior or characteristic of them that is not compatible with your project, its standards or your company workflow. If you are unable to find something suitable after searching online, you can always try your hand at creating content items yourself. This would occur in the Revit family editor. But the details of doing so are out of the scope of this document.
There is much more to architectural communication than simply having a building model. We often need to add dimensions, notes and other kinds of annotation to convey our design intent. Such items are created directly in the views within Revit, but often these items remain connected to the underlying model geometry to which they are associated. In this way, changes not only update the model but keep the annotation coordinated as well.
