Hello. My name is Traci, and I work as a Designated Support Specialist.
00:09
Today, I'm going to do a presentation on how to do a Vault upgrade or migration.
00:15
By the end, hopefully, you'll be all prepared when you're ready to go.
00:18
I have actually been with Autodesk over five years, and have over 25 years of experience in IT and customer support.
00:26
My background is mostly SQL Server, and that is why I support the Vault product.
00:32
During the presentation today, I'm going to cover the planning for your Vault migration.
00:36
I'll cover a basic how-to for installing and upgrading,
00:40
and then you'll be given the opportunity to answer some questions regarding your environment,
00:44
and the proper presentations will be delivered that best fits.
00:48
This will include in-place upgrades, new server migrations, or replicated or single-site environments.
00:55
By the time we're done, I will have delivered a high-level overview,
00:59
what you need to prepare, I will outline the process, let you know what you should know, things to be aware of, if there's any gotchas.
01:06
And then you will also be provided a PDF that includes some additional help resources.
01:12
The safe harbor statement,
01:13
this large batch of words basically just means that don't make any buying decisions based on anything I may say here.
01:19
I may be talking about stuff that may or may not be coming.
01:22
So it is not constituting a promise.
01:25
Now to the meat of the matter - Vault migration.
01:28
Migration can be an upgrade.
01:30
It can be upgrading your Vault from one release to another, moving from 2020 to 2022.
01:36
It can be upgrading your Vault addition if you're using Workgroup and you want to start using Professional.
01:41
It can be moving your current Vault to a different server in the same and/or in a new version.
01:47
There are four key areas that you need to look at when you're ready to do your migration.
01:53
So before you begin, you want to check your hardware and software requirements for the version of Vault you will be installing.
01:58
A Vault implementation can be simple, all the way to complex, depending on your environment,
02:04
and being prepared ahead of time will make it much easier and smoother to go along.
02:08
Some things to keep in mind when you are doing the planning,
02:11
is that different versions of Vault require different configurations of SQL Server and/or operating systems.
02:17
And Vault only allows you to move two versions at a time, which I'll cover a little bit.
02:21
Also, your antivirus settings can get in the way.
02:24
So if you notice a slowdown during the installation or migration, you should check your AV settings.
02:29
And if possible, either disable them or make sure that the appropriate folders are excluded.
02:36
There's a link to this in the resources PDF, but I just wanted to really quickly show you.
02:41
These are the requirements for the different systems as you do your upgrades.
02:48
High Level Overview.
02:50
So I'm going to go through the high level overview, and then I'll get down into the details a little bit more.
02:54
The first thing, as I said, that you're looking at is your hardware.
02:58
The biggest thing that we want to emphasize is that we suggest that you test.
03:04
You test your upgrade. You test the new version.
03:06
If you don't have a test server, can you build one?
03:08
There's a link on the PDF for additional resources on testing,
03:12
but it is crucial and will make a big difference when you do the process.
03:16
So it will give you timing. It will give you -- does your data work?
03:20
It validates your backup system so you know if your DR is working.
03:24
You know how long each phase is going to take, which helps in the planning.
03:27
You can document your steps and what you've done to resolve them.
03:32
And then the big thing is you will need the Filestore and/or a subset of the Filestore in order to use a full test environment.
03:40
So testing includes backing up from production, creating a test environment, or if you already have one, upgrading it,
03:47
restoring your backup, migrate your Vaults, validating the data, and then testing and validating the actual Vault itself.
03:55
The next step, does your SQL Server need to be upgraded?
03:58
We have this really nice chart. And, again, this link is in the resources PDF.
04:03
However, this will tell you if you're going forward certain versions or multiple versions,
04:07
this will tell you if you can use an existing version of SQL.
04:13
The dots in yellow are the ones that you can use for migration purposes only.
04:18
You can't run Vault with the yellow dots in accordance to the versions, but the green ones, you can.
04:23
So if you are moving to 2022 and you want to use SQL 2019 and you're on 2020, you can go ahead and put your 2020 on there.
04:33
You can upgrade your SQL to 2019. It'll work for the migration purposes.
04:38
So next, the Vault server itself.
04:40
You're going to install the current Vault Server, and then you're going to apply the hot fixes.
04:46
And then Vault will ask you if you want to migrate your Vaults, which you will do.
04:50
So you can get all the software from the account portal and Autodesk Vault Server is the ADMS console.
04:56
Autodesk Vault Professional would be your client,
04:59
and Autodesk Vault file server would be your ABFS if you're being in a replicated environment.
05:05
And then, it is recommended that during the process, if you're going through multiple versions or multiple additions,
05:12
you apply the hot fixes prior to running the Vault migration.
05:15
That way it will ensure that the data migrates properly.
05:19
So if you remember, I mentioned earlier that you cannot go more than two versions at a time in Vault.
05:25
And the reason for this is because the database schema has to be updated,
05:28
and the data has to be migrated into the newest version of the sequel server schema.
05:33
So it only supports two previous versions.
05:36
If you've got three or more, if you take a look on the right hand side, it's just in a loop.
05:40
You're going to upgrade, verify that your SQL release works,
05:44
install a release two versions ahead, apply your hot fixes, migrate your Vaults.
05:48
Are you done? Yes.
05:49
Are you done? No. If you're not done, again, make sure that you're still working with a proper SQL version.
05:54
And this is where that chart will come in handy and/or be aware that you may need to upgrade your SQL Server along the way.
06:02
So the Vault Client itself, ADMS server supports the two previous versions of the client version as well.
06:09
So if you upgrade your server two versions ahead and you are running 2022,
06:13
you can still run the 2020 client until you have time to upgrade it.
06:18
But to do that, you need to know that you will not have any enhancements that are included in the client,
06:24
as opposed to that are included in the server.
06:27
So the software that's included in the Microsoft Office add-in, check in the documentation for your version that exists out there.
06:34
And again, you can see which versions of Office are supported.
06:38
If you want to install the clients, you have to have Windows administrative power or power user privileges.
06:44
And the Vault and CAD client versions must be the same.
06:47
So you have to install the CAD upgrades to allow the Vault add-in to work.
06:53
And so, for example, if you take a look here and you've installed Autodesk Vault Server 2022,
06:59
you can use the Vault Professional client 2020, 2021 or 2022.
07:06
By the same token, you have to use the same CAD Inventor or AutoCAD program Inversion as Vault.
07:13
So if you're going to use Vault Client 2020, you have to use Inventor and AutoCAD 2020.
07:19
Same with 2021, 2022.
07:22
And the reason for this, it will not work across.
07:26
And the reason for this is because the Vault add-ins,
07:30
the toolbar that you get at the top of the CAD program that lets you do the Vault functionality,
07:34
will only work with the same matching version.
07:37
Also, just as a quick note, if you install the CAD version first prior to the client, it will automatically add the add-in for you.
07:46
If you do, however, add the CAD client after the Autodesk Vault Client,
07:52
you'll have to go into control panel and add the add-on separately.
07:57
So now once you verify everything is functioning,
07:59
you want to create a backup so you don't have to start all over again if something happens.
08:03
Once you know you're in a good state, create your backup and then you're ready to go.
08:06
The basic installation or upgrade physical process is really quite similar to just about anything else you're going to go through.
08:13
On the installation screen, you're going to select install, you're going to accept the license agreements,
08:19
you're going to provide the serial number and tell it what kind of network license server it is.
08:24
And then, there's a configuration screen, and you're going to select Vault server.
08:30
You're going to put in the name of the SQL server and the users that you're going to use.
08:36
And then lastly, once you click Install, the process is going to perform some prechecks.
08:43
And then if everything checks out, it will continue on and finish the install.
08:48
If any of the prechecks fail, the number beside the actions is going to show you what you need to do, how many failed, and there's a link.
08:56
And most of these links, when you click on them, will actually fix whatever is going on.
08:60
But if it doesn't, it does include instructions or usually directions or guidance on how to address any of the precheck warnings or errors.
09:09
Really quickly, if you are planning on or using Secure Socket Layer (SSL) prior to your upgrade,
09:17
couple things that you just need to keep in mind: You will need to set it up again.
09:20
The way a Vault upgrade works is it actually does an uninstall and a reinstall.
09:24
So some of your configuration files may be overwritten,
09:27
and so you will want to save a copy of the configuration files that you have to edit as part of the upgrade.
09:34
If you're going to a new server, you will need to create new certificates.
09:39
If you're on the same server, you can continue using the certificates that you are already using.
09:43
And as a quick note, if you are going to 2022, you might want to check out our beta site.
09:48
There's some proposed and expected changes for configuring SSL that you can read about there until it's released.
