Add additional point cloud modeling
You can reduce errors by utilizing the point cloud in InfraWorks and bringing that information into Civil 3D. In Autodesk InfraWorks, there is a "Vertical Feature Extraction" tool which can be used after you run “Vertical Feature Extraction” first. With the “Point Cloud Modeling” tool, save time and set the feature styles for trees, street lights, signs and unknown features. Then, review the features processed from the point cloud data and assign features as objects in the model.
Here’s how:
1. In InfraWorks, after running the “Point Cloud Terrain” analysis, select “Vertical Feature Extraction" tool from the Point Clouds panel.
2. This will process the point cloud and bring up the “Vertical Feature Extraction” palette. Here you will find a “Navigation Filter”. We want to filter just the signs for now, so, under “Category”, select “Signs”. Set the minimum height to “3.28’” and maximum height to “15.00’”.
3. Under the “Assign a Feature” tab in the “Vertical Feature Extraction” palette, start cycling through the features using the arrows to find what could classify as a sign.
The feature on this street corner is most likely a sign, for example. You can always refer back to your point cloud to verify.
4. Once you’ve found a feature that is classifying as a sign but is most likely something like a street light, take a look at the “City Furniture” panel. Select the sign icon next to “Rule Style” and change it to the correct feature.
5. Repeat this process for other features of your model including tress, street lights, unidentified object and unknown objects.
By using “Vertical Feature Extraction” and classifying features, you save time from doing it manually. The next step of this process is going to be looking at linear feature extraction and exporting everything into Civil 3D.
