Working within a mixed Desktop Connector version environment
Mixed Desktop Connector version environment
With the release of Desktop Connector 16.x, several key changes were introduced. While it is not mandatory for everyone to upgrade simultaneously, it is recommended as having all users on the same version ensures smoother workflows and easier troubleshooting. Since environments and configurations can be different for each customer, it is recommended that you test a mixed version environment to see if the differences noted affect your users.
Here are some points to consider:
- With the changes around permissions, users in 15.x may have paths truncated while 16.x will contain the full path. In Desktop Connector 16.x, the full folder path is displayed for folders, regardless of view permission, as long as the user has permissions for at least one subfolder. In 15.x, the paths are truncated to hide inaccessible folders.
- Files within folders with the View + Download permission in Desktop Connector 16.x are not set as read-only on the local machine, allowing users to make changes. However, if the user lacks the correct permissions, upload attempts will fail and be shown on the Home screen.
- The Autodesk Docs connector will no longer fix references on download. Using the Move and Rename operations from the Docs cloud data source can result in files not being found during open operations on the local machine. The resulting behaviors will be similar to working on a local drive or a network share.
- For AutoCAD users, there is a change in behavior when performing Save As workflows. In 15.x, the parent drawing will retain all references to the new location. With 16.x, Save As will only save the parent file, and the references will not be attached or saved with that file to the new location.
- While it is encouraged that everyone in your organization be on the same version of Desktop Connector, it is not required. It is recommended that you make certain all workflows, experiences, and troubleshooting will be identical across your organization.
